The Great Barrier Reef

The Blue Hole

Belize's offshore environment remains just as spectacular and unspoiled as it was centuries ago.

Situated 1 mile east of Ambergris Cay is our property's second line of defense, the Belize Barrier Reef. The reef is the second largest barrier reef in the world and the finest manifestation of a coral reef ecosystem in this Hemisphere for its size, unique variety of reef types, and abundance of corals thriving in pristine conditions. Biologist from around the globe come here to study and admire the unspoiled presence of Belize's marine life.

Forming a nearly continuous wall for 150 miles along the continental shelf edge, the Barrier Reef provides life and security to the entire country of Belize, offering some of the most stunning and spectacular dive and snorkel locations in the world. With such underwater brilliance you don't have to look far to find the right excursion to satisfy your sense of underwater adventure

Belize is also well-known by its divers for one of the world's premiere dive location, the Great Blue Hole. This sink hole, made famous by the 1970 expedition of the famous Jacque Cousteau, is 1000 ft in diameter and drops to depths of 412ft; the walls of the Blue Hole are formed by an array of stalactites, stalagmites, and other limestone formations. Within the dark blue pupil of the turquoise sea, visitors can expect to meet the Blue Hole's renowned residents, which include sponges, barracuda, corals, angelfish, as well as schools of Bull and Caribbean Reef sharks.
